Novel Shoulder Retractor

ELLIPSIS
Stable, adjustable tissue retraction, improving access and reducing reliance on surgical staff

Ellipsis is developing a novel orthopedic retractor designed to address long-standing ergonomic and workflow challenges in shoulder surgery. Unlike traditional retractors that are either manually operated or overly bulky, the Ellipsis system provides compact, omnidirectional self-retention using a dual-handle mechanism. This enables stable, adjustable tissue retraction from multiple angles with a single structure, improving access and reducing reliance on surgical staff. The circular frame allows unrestricted visualization of the surgical site while distributing forces evenly. Snap-fit blades simplify setup, and the use of PEEK and stainless steel ensures biocompatibility, radiolucency, and full reusability. Supported by the University of Twente and NOVA SST, the project is currently at TRL 4 and progressing toward cadaveric validation. The TTT voucher will support prototyping, testing, and early-stage clinical preparation. Ellipsis aims to become a scalable solution to other surgical fields such as spine, trauma, and abdominal procedures.
