Chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment, but conventional chemotherapeutic drugs and existing liposomal chemotherapeutic formulations (e.g., Doxil) deliver only a small fraction of the injected dose to the tumour, forcing dose reductions and causing severe side effects in patients. LipoSound is developing ultrasound-responsive liposomes that release their chemotherapy payload on demand, precisely where a focused ultrasound beam is applied. By concentrating the drug at the tumor instead of letting it accumulate in the whole body, LipoSound aims to broaden the therapeutic window and reduce toxicity, opening the door to more precise, on-target drug release.
