Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Nurses in particular are at increased risk of low back pain with direct personal consequences such as above average sick days, early retirement, burnout, headaches and insomnia. At the University of Twente, we have developed a Smart Lumbar Orthosis that provides on-demand, posture-independent and short-time high lumbar compression during force-intensive activities to support and stabilize the lumbar region. This is achieved by combining the effectiveness of a weight-lifting belt with the comfort of a lumbar orthosis by switching between a comfortable inactive state and a highly compressed active state. The technology has been demonstrated under simulated laboratory conditions. The goal of this project is to advance technology transfer and prepare a spin-off to bring the device to market to support occupational groups for a long and healthy working life.
