Annually, 6 million heart stents are placed globally during a PCI by intervention cardiologists to treat patients with coronary artery disease. 20% of the stents are placed near an ostium where correct positioning is critical. Research shows that half of these stents are misplaced due to movements involved (beating heart and patient breathing) and poor visuals. As a result, repair actions are needed, or misplacement is completely avoided by adding more stents into healthy tissue in advance. This lowers the health perspective for the patient, and can double the procedure costs and time. Adding up to 1.5Million man hours and 5 billion euro’s, every year.
