Most patients with kidney failure receive life-saving dialysis therapy. Unfortunately, the current filters of this therapy cannot remove all toxins from patients’ blood. Especially, protein-bound toxins are difficult to remove, leading to not only worsening of the kidney disease and poor quality of life, but also to the development of cardiovascular diseases and high mortality. Moreover, dialysis therapy requires lots of water for the production of dialyzate solution. This project about ‘Mixed Matrix Membranes for home dialysis’ introduces a new type of filter to simultaneously remove toxins from patients’ blood and endotoxins from the therapy’s dialyzate solution, for healthier patients and a greener therapy to be performed at home.
